Altitude Sickness

Nothing Can Bring You Down Like Altitude Sickness.

Age, sex or physical fitness have no bearing on your likelihood of getting altitude sickness. Luckily, Colchester Travel Clinic is here to help with your altitude sickness in Colchester.

Altitude sickness is caused when a person fails to acclimatise properly and their body does not receive enough oxygen. Although at altitude there is the same amount of oxygen in the air, the oxygen pressure in the air drops, and the lungs are unable to take on as much oxygen as the body requires to function normally.

Altitude Sickness Is A Condition That:

  • Causes breathing to become difficult because you aren’t able to take in as much oxygen.
  • Can cause fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, sleep disturbance, shortness of breath, dizziness.
  • Can show symptoms anywhere from 2 hours to 2 days after ascent
  • Can become a medical emergency if ignored.

Be aware of the symptoms of altitude sickness; acclimatise slowly. When climbing, never sleep more than 300 metres higher than previous night and/or if you are showing symptoms. Drink lots of water and Allow rest days every 3 days. ALWAYS attempt to descend if symptoms of altitude illness worsen.

Just because you haven’t had it before doesn’t mean you won’t develop it on another trip, and prevention is always better than the cure. Our tablets have the ability to acidify the blood, which increases ventilation of the lungs, which in turn helps prevent altitude sickness from developing. Our team can talk you through strategies to prevent and mitigate against altitude sickness in Colchester.
